Ernie grew up fishing and hunting around Laguna Madre and the King Ranch, made his living shrimping, fought against Texas fishing regulations in the 1970s and 80s, helped organize the famous commercial fishermen's blockade of the Intracoastal Waterway, and later built one of the most recognizable seafood restaurants on the Gulf Coast. We talk about the Texas "Shrimp Wars," Redfish Bill 1000, commercial fishing politics, game wardens, the rise of croaker fishing, Vietnamese shrimping communities on the Texas coast, King Ranch poaching stories, life on a shrimp boat, and how a pile of boiled shrimp sold on the side of the road turned into a restaurant empire.Whether you agree with Ernie or not, his stories offer a rare firsthand look at a disappearing way of life along the Texas Gulf Coast.Topics in this interview:Texas commercial fishing historyShrimping in Laguna MadreRedfish Bill 1000 (1981)The Texas Shrimp WarsCommercial fishermen's blockadeSnoopy's Pier and restaurant beginningsCroaker fishing and trout fishingVietnamese fishermen in TexasGulf Coast culture and historyCorpus Christi fishing historyLife as a shrimp boat captainIf you enjoy stories about hunting, fishing, conservation, Texas history, and the people who lived it, subscribe for more interviews.#TexasFishing #Shrimping #CorpusChristi #LagunaMadre #CommercialFishing #TexasHistory #FishingStories #KingRanch #Redfish #TroutFishing #SnoopysPier #GulfCoast #TexasCoast #OutdoorPodcast #AndrewThomasVisuals
