Bobby Pinson on Toby Keith’s Last No. 1 & the Call He’ll Never Forget

Bobby Pinson shares the story behind Toby Keith’s “Made in America” and the late-night phone call telling him his friend was gone—just as a band nearby started playing “How Do You Like Me Now?!” This week on God’s Country, hit country songwriter Bobby Pinson joins brothers Dan and Reid Isbell, also known as The Brothers Hunt, for an unforgettable conversation about Toby Keith, the stories behind the songs, and the hard-earned lessons that make country music matter. Bobby opens up about the friendship that made Toby feel like a brother, how a conversation with Trace Adkins sparked “Made in America,” and what he learned from writing alongside one of country music’s most unmistakable voices. Then things get wild: Bobby tells the story of his backyard elk escaping onto a Tennessee highway, a ski-slope confrontation with Toby, and how Rhett Akins got him hooked on turkey hunting. Plus, hear the unexpected origin of Eric Church’s “Some of It,” an acoustic performance of the song, and the powerful story of a listener who said “Don’t Ask Me How I Know” saved his life. Along the way: faith, family, American pride, estate-sale hustles, and Bobby’s unfiltered take on songwriting, AI, and staying yourself in a changing Nashville. 👇 What’s your favorite piece of wisdom from Bobby?
