When the talk is about English Coonhounds the name Bates is spoken with the same level of recognition and reverence as Petty in NASCAR or Griffey in baseball. Ed Bates, at 83 years old is still playing the coonhound game thanks to the family link to his son Scott, now 60. Scott has followed in his famous father’s footsteps from a very young age. We join Ed and Scott to discuss their beginnings and that of the Hardtime English dogs for which they have been famous through the years. The discussion covers their beginnings in the sport, their competition and stud dog success with hounds like Red Bird, Hardtime Speck, Bates’ Blue Cash, Meeks John, Hardtime Spider among their historic hounds and current standouts, The Dixie Chick and The Tennessee Stud. This a podcast for the purists in the coon hunter ranks that have been there, done that for a very long time but it will also resonate with beginners that love the sport’s history and aspire to make a name in the sport themselves, notoriety that will hopefully propel them to the top tier of the sport as the Bates family has done. This is the 350th th episode in Steve Fielder’s podcasting career and will most likely be the last. But don’t be surprised if another SPECIAL EPISODE shows up from time to time. This week on Creekside Chronicles, I’m telling the story of how spending every free minute chasing fish on the river finally caught up with me. After running the same line upriver I’d been running all summer, one bad hit on a hidden rock left me with a hole in my boat and a whole lot of time to think. What started as a rough day on the water turned into a reminder about balance, priorities, and why sometimes God has a way of slowing us down when we need it most. We touch on that dog that won’t hunt and how the changing seasons keep us going. Don’t let the title fool you, there's plenty of dog talk going on. In this episode, we break down the difference between visually stimulated hounds and those that rely on their nose to work out a track. We look at what it really means when a young pup doesn’t bark at live game but shows no fear—and instead chooses to trail what’s left behind. We talk about how different dogs process game, common mistakes handlers make (especially trying to force excitement), and why that quiet, thinking pup might actually have more long-term potential than you think. If you’ve ever questioned whether your pup is behind—or just wired different—this episode will help you see it in a whole new light. Not every good hound comes out of the gate bold. Some take time, patience, and the right kind of handling to find their confidence—and if you push too hard, you can set them back just as fast as you move them forward. In this episode, we break down what a timid or hesitant hound really needs. We talk about reading your dog, knowing when to step in and when to step back, and how to build confidence without creating pressure. From controlled exposure to the woods, to letting them learn at their own pace, this one’s about bringing the best out of a dog that might not show it right away. Because sometimes the quiet ones turn into the most dependable dogs you’ll ever follow. This week’s episode recaps a stretch of hard-earned lessons in the outdoors—from finally breaking a tough streak on the river, to a close but unsuccessful opening day in the turkey woods, to working through the ups and downs of training a young hound. The common thread? You can’t force results. Whether it’s fishing, hunting, or dog training, progress shows up on its own timeline. Some days test your patience, others reward your persistence—but every rep counts. This episode is a reminder that consistency builds confidence, and the work you put in today pays off when it finally all clicks. Good handlers know when to step in. Great handlers know when to stay quiet. In this episode, we break down one of the biggest mistakes handlers make—overhandling. When do you step in, and when do you step back? We talk about how too much interference can limit a dog’s natural ability, and why letting them work things out builds better, more confident hounds in the long run.
