ALL FOR ONE? BYU Football Needs Reserves to Shine & Power Them Past Upset-Minded Iowa State Cyclones | ISU Won't Have Their Own Studs | Does Jay Hill Regret BYU Exit?

The BYU Cougars face a massive test this week as they prepare to host the Iowa State Cyclones, and the biggest storyline in Provo centers around how the offense will cope without star running back LJ Martin. On this episode of Locked On Cougars, host Jake Hatch dives deep into the major personnel dilemma facing Aaron Roderick's offense and breaks down the exact blueprint needed to overcome this crucial absence against a formidable Big 12 opponent. With LJ Martin sidelined, the offensive load shifts to a committee of running backs. We analyze what a triumvirate of Preston Rex, Journee Tonga and Devaughn Eka bring to the table. Can this trio approximate what Martin uniquely provides to the BYU rushing attack through inside zone schemes, explosive outside speed, and tackle-breaking production? We also examine how offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick may adjust play-calling tendencies, how Bear Bachmeier figures into the ground game strategy, and why execution remains the ultimate equalizer for the Cougars on Friday night.Shifting to the defensive side of the ball, we look at how Kelly Poppinga's unit has continually adapted following massive offseason staff shifts. That naturally brings us to the lingering national talking points involving Michigan—from Jay Hill's transition to Ann Arbor to the broader personnel and structural turbulence facing the Wolverines under new leadership. We explore the contrast between how Kalani Sitake's program has maintained seamless cultural and defensive continuity versus programs experiencing dramatic slides, proving that the foundation built in Provo isn't just a house of cards. From analyzing crucial Big 12 conference implications and roster depth battles to breaking down the ripple effects of high-profile coaching moves across the college football landscape, this episode covers all the angles.
