Another entry from the CLNS archive vault — April 26, 1991, Boston Garden. Game 1 of the Celtics–Pacers first-round series, and the night a Larry Bird–Chuck Person rivalry that started in Person's rookie year boiled over on live TV. Bird was coming off a month of rest for his back. He shot 6-for-20 and still finished with a triple-double: 21 points, 12 rebounds, 12 assists and 3 steals in Boston's 127–120 win. Reggie Lewis scored 28, Kevin McHale added 25 in 27 minutes, and Robert Parish went 10-for-12. Chuck Person had 23 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists. And in the middle of it, a Bird–Person staredown turned into a McHale shove, a technical foul, and a coach who was not happy about it. Nick sets it up, the full TNT highlight reel plays uncut, and Nick wraps it. A bonus companion to our Game 5 breakdown. Another entry from the CLNS archive vault — May 30, 1987, Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals, Pistons at Celtics in a sweltering Boston Garden. Four days after Larry Bird's steal saved Game 5, Detroit won Game 6 and came back to Boston one win from the Finals. Robert Parish played 42 minutes on a sprained ankle. K.C. Jones coached two days after his mother's funeral. Joe Dumars scored 35 on 21 shots. And late in the third quarter, Adrian Dantley and Vinnie Johnson collided head-on — Dantley left on a stretcher. Bird played all 48 minutes: 37 points, 9 rebounds, 9 assists, 10-for-10 from the line. Celtics 117, Pistons 114. Bob Ryan is joined once again by Gary Tanguay to discuss more Celtics legends from yesteryear. They start by answering a listener question regarding Rick Barry & John Havlicek. Who was the better player? Bob Ryan passionately makes the case for Hondo. Later, they remember the famous trade that paved the way for Kevin McHale and Robert Parish to land in Boston. Bob recounts their incredible careers and where they stack up among the greats. He always explains how different or similar Kevin McHale's career would've been had he never played with Larry Bird. Jeff Goodman and Gary Tanguay on Kevin McHale: a post scorer so unstoppable that getting him the ball meant the possession was already over. Part of the trade that also brought Robert Parish to Boston for the rights to Joe Barry Carroll — arguably the greatest trade in NBA history, and it delivered three championships. "You just couldn't stop him. I think he's kind of underappreciated and forgotten because Bird was so good." 0:00 — Cold open: McHale's post scoring 0:41 — The Kevin McHale topic & the Joe Barry Carroll trade 1:31 — McHale's unstoppable post moves 2:34 — Bird/McHale vs. Tatum/Jaylen Brown 3:11 — McHale's underrated defense 4:08 — The 1980s Celtics frontline dominance 5:44 — McHale's back-to-the-basket mastery 6:19 — PrizePicks Join this channel to get access to perks, exclusive content, rate games, moments, footage and LIVE NBA Legends Q&A and AMAs with members! Another entry from the CLNS archive vault — March 15, 1988, Market Square Arena, and Larry Bird is playing with a fractured orbital bone and a pair of goggles he couldn't stand. Nine days earlier, a Dell Curry elbow broke the bone under Bird's left eye. He finished that game seeing two rims. Three nights later he showed up in goggles and scored 36 on the Spurs. This is the fourth and final goggles game — 34 points, 12-of-22, zero fouls, against a Pacers team with a 22-year-old rookie named Reggie Miller who set a franchise rookie 3-point record that night. Bird played four games in the goggles and shot 55% from the floor. In his first game without them, he went 8-for-19 while Michael Jordan scored 50. The full WLVI TV-56 broadcast — Bob Cousy on the call, the rim-simulation graphic, the Ainge and Miller record nights, and the first Celtics season sweep of Indiana. Bob Ryan spends nearly 30 minutes making the case for John Havlicek as one of the most underrated legends in NBA history — the only non-center to guard and outplay both Oscar Robertson and Jerry West as they aged, an 8-time champion who invented his own position, and a guy who averaged 34 minutes a game at age 35 in his final season. Then Bob answers the real question: could Bird and Havlicek have actually played together? His answer — "ridiculously good" — plus the stories that make both men legends beyond the stat sheet: Havlicek's near-career as an NFL wide receiver for the Cleveland Browns, his famous thriftiness, and the "Hondo handfuls" ice bucket story that still makes Bob Ryan laugh. ☘️ A follow-up to: "What If You Had to Pick — Bird or Havlicek?" https://youtu.be/6ALYRV7bco4 00 — Intro 1:14 — Havlicek & Bird debate intro 2:02 — Havlicek's case 3:21 — Enter Larry Bird 4:10 — Bob on Havlicek's greatness 10:09 — PrizePicks 12:22 — Havlicek vs. Bird similarities 17:20 — Havlicek vs. Bird differences 22:27 — Stories about Larry Bird and John Havlicek 26:48 — Outro NBA History on CLNS Media is Powered by 💰 PrizePicks - Sign up at http://prizepicks.onelink.me/LME0/CLNS & Download the app today and use code CLNS to get $150 in lineups instantly if you win your first $5 lineup! Another entry from the CLNS archive vault — January 12, 1988, Chicago Stadium, and the Bird-Jordan duel almost nobody brings up. Maybe bc it wasn’t in the playoffs? Maybe bc time just skipped over it. Either way, CLNS The Tapes series is dustin off the vhs and breaking this one down.. Larry Bird went for 38 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists in 44 minutes. Michael Jordan answered with 42 on 19-of-35. Both men had exactly 10 points at halftime. Then they combined for 60 after the break. But the number nobody talks about is zero. With 23 seconds left, the Chicago Stadium PA announcer called Michael Jordan for his sixth personal foul and sent him to the bench. The foul belonged to Charles Oakley. Jordan finished the night with ZERO personal fouls and ZERO turnovers in 43 minutes — and re-entered the game with two seconds on the clock. Also on this tape: Kevin McHale's 10,000th career point, Danny Ainge extending his three-point streak record on a 1-for-5 night, Robert Parish going 18 and 16, a rookie Reggie Lewis, Fred Roberts wearing Cedric Maxwell's number 31, and Ric Flair and Dusty Rhodes sitting courtside in fur coats. Boston won 104-97. Twenty-five days later both teams were back in this same building for All-Star Weekend. Two rounds apart that spring, Detroit ended both their seasons. 📼 FULL GAME AVAIL TO MEMBERS HERE: https://youtu.be/4s5BQxJ98jA?is=gUMYTbLeVN5cjfVX NBA History on CLNS Media is Powered by: 💰 PrizePicks - Sign up at http://prizepicks.onelink.me/LME0/CLNS & Download the app today and use code CLNS to get $150 instantly in Lineups if you win your first $5 Lineup!
