The Assam Assembly has passed the Uniform Civil Code Bill 2026, making Assam the third state after Uttarakhand and Gujarat to clear the legislation. Introduced by the BJP government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Bill seeks to ban having more than one spouse, make registration of live-in relationships compulsory and introduce uniform laws for marriage, divorce and inheritance, while excluding Scheduled Tribes from its scope. Meanwhile, ten Indian sailors detained in Iran since July 2025 after their tanker was seized near Jask Port have been released following diplomatic efforts by Indian authorities.
