Yes! It took a member of Mission of Burma to finally pick a Beatles film to discuss, three years into the podcast! Totally honored to have the person behind so much of my favorite sonic wizardry, Roger Clark Miller, on Revolutions Per Movie. We discuss the mysterious lore behind the Horrible Truth About Burma live LP and how it might be the high water mark of their tape manipulator (Martin Swope), the moment when Roger first heard the elements of Burma come together, the journey to get Peter Prescott a microphone so he could also sing in the band, Sproton Layer--Roger’s band he started in 1969 with his brothers when they were barely teenagers, playing Sun Ra records to weed out the drummers who auditioned for Burma, the influences on the chaos inside the beauty of their songs, why Roger thinks Sproton Layer was Burma through a psychedelic lens rather than a post-punk one (and how they interconnected artistically), the hope baked within The Summer Of Love, Roger's first band Factor and why he had to leave them behind, Silver Apples, recording an improv session with your brothers while your parents go square dancing, how a 70 year old modern dancer heard Sproton Layer and decided their music needed to be published in score format, how Roger felt he finally became a good guitar player by the time they recorded Burma's VS, the making of the Vacu Trem and Vacu Fuzz guitar pedals, the Vacuheads, Roger's scientific family and living with monkeys in their backyard, how Roger writes lyrics and Syd Barrett’s influence on him, how frustratingly great Yellow Submarine is (of course The Beatles have a fantastic animated film in them!), how George Harrison's drone pop tracks were often the highlight for us, Roger seeing the film on acid in the theater, The Beatles' animated shows, George's song "Blue Jay Way" and its lyrical influence on Roger’s new record (The Green Man), getting off the Beatles train and the butcher cover, how different The Stones are versus The Beatles in dealing with their legacy and more!Roger Clark Miller:rogerclarkmiller.com/The Green Man:rogercmillermusic.bandcamp.com/album/the-green-manSproton Layer:sprotonlayer12xu.bandcamp.com/album/press-your-hand-and-the-whole-room-fluctuatesREVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film, or music videos to discuss. Welcome to an ENCORE PRESENTATION of classic REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE episodes from the vaults. This was an early episode of Revolutions Per Movie with one of my favorite documentary filmmakers, David Weissman. Through his hard work and artistry, he made the story of The Cockettes available to future generations of free-spirited weirdos to drink from forever. (Episode 12 originally aired on Dec. 9th 2023)ORIGINAL SHOW NOTES:This week, we talked to David Weissman (the co-director of ‘The Cockettes’ & ‘We Were Here’) about the amazing documentary ‘The Cockettes’—documenting the trailblazing, avant-garde drag & music ensemble from the late 60s. We discussed the origin stories of The Cockettes, John Waters’ passion for the troupe and his involvement with the documentary, the difference in the ways the 60s played out for The East Coast vs. The West Coast, the emerging SF punk scene & brushing your teeth with drugs. So let down your hair and put on a show with this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie!!!David Weissman:https://davidweissmanfilms.com/cockettes.comhttps://sylvester.bandcamp.com/album/private-recordings-august-1970REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guide d By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film, or music videos to discuss. I'm honored to celebrate the 3rd anniversary of Revolutions Per Movie with two legends--King Coffey of Butthole Surfers & filmmaker Tom Stern (Freaked, The Idiot Box), who directed the new documentary BUTTHOLE SURFERS: THE HOLE TRUTH & NOTHING BUTT.We discuss the complicated relationship with Texas and what about that push/pull creates singular artistic statements, how Tom met the band and how he started filming the "Cherub" music video that same day, the Texas mythos, King's experience of seeing Butthole Surfers for the first time, Tom losing his house in the LA fires and using it to great dramatic effect in the documentary, what was the first song King felt like he added his stamp to, creating their iconic drum sound with Teresa Nervosa, how they got the puppetry in the documentary to mimic the band's movements so perfectly, the live Blind Eye Sees All VHS tape, King's other amazing band USA/Mexico, the story behind Tom's super 8mm Butthole Surfers epic The Bar-B-Que Movie starring a pre-Deadwood John Hawkes, putting melons on your head at flyswatting parties, building Gibby's flapping hair contraption, what it felt like for King being on stage in Butthole Surfers, King's thoughts on being interviewed about your trauma but having to make it entertaining, why the band thought Tom was the only person who could make a documentary about them, burning words into the audiences' retinas, scream therapy, the creation of their album Rembrandt Pussyhorse, how frank Johnny Depp is in the film about his and Gibby's addictions, how the first three albums were complete studio creations and how that changed later on, the Celebrity Club in Atlanta, their communal life styles and more!Thank you to everyone who has listened to Revolutions Per Movie Patreon these last three years. And a giant thank-you to anyone who supports the RPM Patreon — the show would not exist without your kindness.BUTTHOLE SURFERS: THE HOLE TRUTH & NOTHING BUTT MOVIE:buttholesurfersmovie.comREVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guide d By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film, or music videos to discuss.
