Hella Martens and The Wild Oceans

In this episode, we sit down with marine mammal naturalist Hella Martens, a longtime friend from our animal communication training days, who has spent over two decades guiding ship expeditions in the Arctic and Antarctica. Hella traces her journey from a horse-loving only child in the Netherlands to a career spent tracking whales, dolphins, and other marine mammals across some of the planet's most remote waters, sharing hard-won lessons about sacrifice, following her heart, and stepping outside her comfort zone again and again. We talk about her most humbling encounters, including an unforgettable close pass with a juvenile blue whale in the Azores, and dig into the deeper questions her work raises: who wildlife management really serves, the pressures tourism places on wild animals, and what it means to approach them with genuine respect rather than force. Hella also opens up about weaving animal communication more intentionally into her field work, including a profound moment witnessing a total solar eclipse in Greenland, and closes with a moving quote from writer Henry Beston on seeing animals not as lesser beings but as "other nations" sharing this earth with us.
