In this episode of Between Bombs Callbacks, Dan and Larry return after an unexpected hiatus, battling respiratory illness, cross-state moves, and the chaos that comes with life offstage. They dive into the uncomfortable reality every comic faces: winning over audiences who don’t instantly like you, and why real growth in comedy still comes from miles on the road and word-of-mouth connections. The conversation also takes an honest look at comedy competitions and how they can quietly undermine camaraderie in the scene. The episode wraps with a callback to their interview with Lisa Rimmert and a reminder that the best way to support the show is simple: spread the word. Our SponsorsVisit any of the following sponsors and use promo code "AOBPOD" at checkout to receive:20% off an item at Liqure Gummies: https://liqure.com/15% off an item at Old Glory: https://oldglory.com/20% off an item at Aspire Drinks: https://aspiredrinks.com/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-art-of-bombing-a-comedy-podcast--5788059/support.Art of Bombing:"Nobody Had a Podcast Called The Art of Bombing" Theme by John Hult https://johnhult.bandcamp.com/album/half-a-life-to-recoverWebsite: http://artofbombingpod.comLinks: https://linktr.ee/artofbombingpodBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-art-of-bombing-a-guide-to-stand-up-comedy--5788059/support.Hosts:Dan Bublitz Jr: http://www.danbublitz.com/ Larry Smith: https://larrysmithcomedy.com/
Lisa Rimmert started her journey in St. Louis performing improv, but discovered a love of stand-up. She and Dan discuss how hard it has been to start over again and again, the costs of performing, and the challenges of working in small markets. She tells Dan about bombing at the Seattle Comedy Competition, the differences in performing at competitions versus regular shows, and the feeling of being down and it being against you. Lisa RimmertLisa Rimmert is a standup comedian and award-winning author, a military spouse who wouldn’t hurt a fly, and a childfree champion who looks like a soccer mom. She shines on stage, turning these everyday contradictions into razor-sharp jokes delivered with heartland humility. She has performed all over the country with headliners like Bobcat Goldthwait, TJ Miller, Moshe Kasher, Zoltan Kaszas, and Steve Hofstetter. New to Georgia, she is quickly making her mark in Atlanta and throughout the South, at Laughing Skull Lounge, the Alley Stage, the Blue Ridge Comedy Festival, North Carolina Comedy Festival, and more. Lisa has also performed at clubs and in festivals throughout the country, from Washington state to Washington, D.C. Her book, Stay: My Forever Friendship with an Aging Dog, earned an award for Best First Book from the Independent Book Publishers Association, and she’s currently working on book number two.https://www.lisarimmert.com/Our Sponsors Visit any of the following sponsors and use promo code "AOBPOD" at checkout to receive:20% off an item at Liqure Gummies: https://liqure.com/ 15% off an item at Old Glory: https://oldglory.com/ 20% off an item at Aspire Drinks: https://aspiredrinks.com/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-art-of-bombing-a-comedy-podcast--5788059/support.Art of Bombing:"Nobody Had a Podcast Called The Art of Bombing" Theme by John Hult https://johnhult.bandcamp.com/album/half-a-life-to-recoverWebsite: http://artofbombingpod.comLinks: https://linktr.ee/artofbombingpodBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-art-of-bombing-a-guide-to-stand-up-comedy--5788059/support.Hosts:Dan Bublitz Jr: http://www.danbublitz.com/ Larry Smith: https://larrysmithcomedy.com/
Between Bombs Ep. 321 Callbacks finds Dan and Larry calling back their conversation with Katherine Rogue and digging deeper into the craft of stand-up. They talk about being honest about the time you can realistically do on stage, why having the ability to pivot (and read the room) is a survival skill, and how staying observant in everyday life fuels better material—without feeling like you always have to be “on.” Plus, they reflect on coming up in rural and smaller comedy scenes and how that shapes your voice, work ethic, and perspective as a comic.
Katherine Rogue started not four years ago, but is wasting no time, spending as much time on stage as possible. She and Dan chat about coming up in comedy in a rural area, the trap that is feeling like you have to write new material weekly for the same crowd, and how having a background in other art forms has helped with stage presence. Also, how being observant while out helps with material, the “club” that is comedy, the vital importance of being able to pivot to other material, and the age-old advice of being honest about your time. Crowd work, comedy festivals, and if Dan has ever experienced a break-up! This episode covers it all!Katherine RogueKatherine Rogue is the matriarch of the Blacksburg, VA comedy scene. Her minivan humor can take a sharp turn as she explores observations from parenting, general life, and the upcoming doom of menopause. Katherine has been a first-round loser in Game of Jokes, the Ultimate Comic Challenge, and Blue Ridge Comedy Knockout. She produces shows in the New River Valley of Virginia and performs throughout Virginia, North Carolina, West Virginia, and Tennessee.https://linktr.ee/ComediansGoneRogueOur Sponsors Visit any of the following sponsors and use promo code "AOBPOD" at checkout to receive:20% off an item at Liqure Gummies: https://liqure.com/ 15% off an item at Old Glory: https://oldglory.com/ 20% off an item at Aspire Drinks: https://aspiredrinks.com/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-art-of-bombing-a-comedy-podcast--5788059/support.Art of Bombing:"Nobody Had a Podcast Called The Art of Bombing" Theme by John Hult https://johnhult.bandcamp.com/album/half-a-life-to-recoverWebsite: http://artofbombingpod.comLinks: https://linktr.ee/artofbombingpodBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-art-of-bombing-a-guide-to-stand-up-comedy--5788059/support.Hosts:Dan Bublitz Jr: http://www.danbublitz.com/ Larry Smith: https://larrysmithcomedy.com/
In this holiday edition and season finale of Between Bombs Ep. 320 Callbacks, Dan and Larry go back to their conversation with Cori Stewart to break down the unspoken rules of hosting and producing comedy. We talk about why stealing jokes, even as an intro, is a fast way to lose trust, how bringing comics up in weird ways derails a show, and why due diligence matters more than last-minute winging it. The big reminder of the episode: you’re not the star, you’re the manager, and strong callbacks only work when you respect the room and the comics in it.Our SponsorsVisit any of the following sponsors and use promo code "AOBPOD" at checkout to receive:20% off an item at Liqure Gummies: https://liqure.com/15% off an item at Old Glory: https://oldglory.com/20% off an item at Aspire Drinks: https://aspiredrinks.com/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-art-of-bombing-a-comedy-podcast--5788059/support.Art of Bombing:"Nobody Had a Podcast Called The Art of Bombing" Theme by John Hult https://johnhult.bandcamp.com/album/half-a-life-to-recoverWebsite: http://artofbombingpod.comLinks: https://linktr.ee/artofbombingpodBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-art-of-bombing-a-guide-to-stand-up-comedy--5788059/support.Hosts:Dan Bublitz Jr: http://www.danbublitz.com/ Larry Smith: https://larrysmithcomedy.com/
We’re a BIG fan of Cori Stewart! Getting her start in St Louis, the now Denver comic talks with Dan about loving comedy from an early age, her mother nurturing that love, and how important that is. From getting started in high school to hosting at Helium, Cori is always a ray of sunshine in whatever room she’s in. Cori and Dan talk about the worst night hosting Cori’s had, how the room is a factor, when the other comics are late, and how much she loves setting up other comics for success (and hates when a host sets people up for failure) From punching up old jokes to Cori’s neo-vaudevillian sensibilities to the importance of being intentional, and how reinvention can save you, this is a great episode to step into our winter break!Cori StewartCori Stewart is a nationally touring comic whose silly, smart jokes are inspired by her belief that everything is beautiful, hilarious, and dumb in equal measure.https://www.instagram.com/cori_does_stuff/Our SponsorsVisit any of the following sponsors and use promo code "AOBPOD" at checkout to receive:20% off an item at Liqure Gummies: https://liqure.com/15% off an item at Old Glory: https://oldglory.com/20% off an item at Aspire Drinks: https://aspiredrinks.com/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-art-of-bombing-a-comedy-podcast--5788059/support.Art of Bombing:"Nobody Had a Podcast Called The Art of Bombing" Theme by John Hult https://johnhult.bandcamp.com/album/half-a-life-to-recoverWebsite: http://artofbombingpod.comLinks: https://linktr.ee/artofbombingpodBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-art-of-bombing-a-guide-to-stand-up-comedy--5788059/support.Hosts:Dan Bublitz Jr: http://www.danbublitz.com/ Larry Smith: https://larrysmithcomedy.com/
