The Women Who Almost Stopped The Feminist Revolution

In today’s episode, Seth Gruber examines two women who helped shape opposing visions of womanhood in modern America: Gloria Steinem and Phyllis Schlafly. Steinem became one of the most prominent leaders of second-wave feminism, advocating for abortion rights, workplace equality, and broader feminist political causes. Schlafly became one of feminism’s most effective conservative opponents, organizing women against the Equal Rights Amendment and defending traditional family roles and sex distinctions.  Seth contrasts their legacies and makes the case that the feminist revolution promised liberation while damaging marriage, motherhood, and the distinctions between men and women. With Steinem’s death on September 2, 2026, the episode asks a larger question: which vision of womanhood will shape the next generation?
