For this episode, Catherine, David and Matt are joined in the Wimbledon library by Matt Futterman to talk about his new book, The Cruelest Game. The book is an in-depth and up-close look at the sport’s modern era, its stars, and what it takes to succeed in professional tennis. Using his incredible access, Matt speaks to players and team members on his quest to empathetically figure out why the sport seems to take such a toll on everyone and whether there are any secret codes that will allow players to thrive at the summit of this brutal game. With chapters dedicated to most of the sport’s top players, Matt explores the individual paths taken by them, as well as the unique and shared challenges they all face as tennis emerges from the era of The Big 3 and Serena Williams. We speak to Matt about his inspiration for writing the book, some of the most memorable conversations he had over the past three years while working on it, and the recurring themes such as parent-child coaching dynamics and what makes tennis stand out from other sports when it comes to the price paid by its athletes. The Cruelest Game: Chasing Greatness in Professional Tennis comes out on Tuesday August 4th 2026 or is available for pre-order now, with the audiobook read by Catherine. It’s wedding season, it’s holiday season and it’s moving house season, but tennis never stops so Catherine, David and Matt are here to react to the latest results and news since Wimbledon. Part one - We cover a big week for Stefanos Tsitsipas who won the title in Gstaad. Could this help to revitalise him? And will it be validation for ending his coaching relationship with his father? Elsewhere, there’s chat about Andrey Rublev winning in Bastad and Daniel Merida continuing his rise with a title in Umag. Part two - We discuss a fun week on the WTA Tour in Athens as Maria Sakkari followed in her mother’s footsteps and reached the final, while Barbora Krejcikova won the title. Part three - We react to some significant coaching changes on the ATP side and the report that the WTA has enacted a policy requiring that all players must undergo genetic sex testing in order to maintain their eligibility to compete on the WTA Tour. For ad-free listening and bonus content, Become a Friend. For one last time at Wimbledon in 2026, Catherine, David and Matt were live on YouTube to react to Jannik Sinner beating Alexander Zverev 6-7 7-6 6-3 6-4 to defend his title at SW19. We discuss the way Zverev hit his forehand better than ever to take a one set lead, how Sinner stayed calm to raise his game and level up, and the final two sets which saw the Italian take charge. Should Zverev take the positives from pushing Sinner more than he has done in a while? Or will the fact he still fell short mean this one stings just as much? As for Sinner, we cover the importance of this title for his career as he bounced back from such disappointment at Roland Garros, and what the next few months could look like for him as Carlos Alcaraz’s future remains uncertain. We also round up the day’s other results, reflect on the tournament as a whole, and say lots of big thank yous as our Wimbledon coverage concludes for another year. Catherine, David and Matt were live moments after Linda Noskova became Wimbledon champion, defeating her Czech compatriot Karolina Muchova 6-2 5-7 6-3 in what became a dramatic final. We start by discussing the important moments in the match; Noskova’s sublime performance at the start to build a 6-2 5-2 lead, the choke which saw her lose five match points across three games and be taken to a third set, and her remarkable reset to then win that deciding set. How did Noskova pull it all off? How surprising was Muchova’s slow start? And what might the future hold for both Noskova and Muchova? We also run through the day’s other results, discuss Henry Patten standing up for doubles, and look ahead to tomorrow’s men’s final between Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev. Catherine, David and Matt react live to women’s semi-finals day as Karolina Muchova and Linda Noskova ensured there will be a Czech winner on Saturday. We start with Muchova’s extraordinary win over Coco Gauff in a final set tiebreak. How did Muchova manage to beat Gauff over the distance? What was Gauff thinking with that drop shot on her match point? And do we have any concerns about Muchova when it comes to physicality and nerves in the final? As for the second semi-final , we talk about Noskova’s remarkable poise and temperament which saw her produce another brilliant performance, and debate the extent to which Marta Kostyuk could have done more. We also look ahead to the men’s semi-finals and in particular the order of them, which sees Arthur Fery vs Alexander Zverev scheduled first, and Novak Djokovic vs Jannik Sinner on second. What might have contributed to this switch? And who will it benefit? For ad-free listening and bonus content, Become a Friend. Check out our new merch shop! Talk tennis with Friends on The Barge!
