Whoa, dude! If it isn’t Off-Road Spicoli: the urban legend behind Urban Assault, king of the dirt and crown prince of the waves – Blake Wilkey! Arriving from his native San Diego with a warm smile and a glint in his eye, you just know this mystical rad-man has wild stories to relate. From his earliest days on the water, to his mechanical upbringing in the dirt, he found his way to mythic status when he turned his hand to building bugs (some of them, you may just have heard before!). Before long, that mischievous gleam in his eye landed upon his own city, and when Urban Assault exploded across the internet in 2016, his legend was as cemented as perhaps the most radical (..ok, nefarious) character in the automotive space. Now, he’s here to tell the full tale as well as his other antics, including the NORRA, Baja, his own brand Shreddy Lyfe and his latest diabolical creation…. the death boat? So! Turn on, tune in and drop out to this freestylin’, tube-wave-ridin’ conversation. As ever, enjoy!@BlakeWilkey357@ShreddyLyfestyle@BrianScotto@321ActionActionPartners:FCP EuroHeat Wave VisualWera ToolsKW SuspensionsProducer: Nick Rutter @nickrutterartsEditor: Nick Selgrath @not-built-for-thisMusic: SlikSound Patreon: https://patreon.com/u37266647https://bio.site/321actionactionpodcasts@321actionaction.com00:00 - Welcome & Introduction00:55 - 45 Days in Jail for a Video: Worth It?12:17 - Born to Ride and Dirt Road Beginnings17:22 - Tough Trucks18:35 - What Is It About Bugs?21:52 - Sponsor: FCP Euro23:21 - Building Your Own Freestyle Path32:09 - Fabrication Work and TT Bug Builds36:21 - Shreddy Lyfe38:56 - Why the 80s Just Looked Cool41:49 - Next Builds and 6100 Plans43:58 - Class 11 Explained46:59 - Why NORRA Rules51:19 - Scumbug and Baja Dreams55:29 - Karol G Music Video Surprise59:36 - Sponsors: Heat Wave Visual, Wera Tools & KW Suspensions01:01:32 - Death Boat Origins01:05:52 - Early Boating Background01:09:21 - Pastranaland Stories01:15:21 - Future Film Scouting?01:17:45 - Down in Mexico01:23:15 - Too Many Cars - Just Like Scotto?01:30:03 - Weird Bug Builds01:31:35 - Many Iterations of Scumbug01:34:04 - UTVs Taking Over - Bad for the Culture?01:38:45 - Everybody Remembers Their First Time01:42:03 - Camping Next to the Sea of Cortez01:46:11 - Megalodon vs TT Bug01:50:07 - Rallycross Bug Ideas01:52:00 - Plans for a Collab?
Very Vehicular welcomes RJ de Vera! Each season we like to bring on a guest from inside the automotive industry whose position and experience helps us better understand the issues facing car culture, and while RJ is more than qualified in that regard, there’s more that he’s done… much more! He was a foundational part of the import scene in the 90s, working as a writer and photographer for Super Street before ascending to Editor at Large. He was the go-to guy on the scene consulting for a plethora of OEMs and brands looking to break off a little piece of the magic for themselves. He even had a role in a notable movie franchise - word to the wise is he’s still collecting residual checks for his on-screen role to this day. Trading the underground for a storied chapter in the corporate world (twelve years at 3M / Meguiars no less), he’s now taken his rightful place atop the mountain as Vice President of Marketing at SEMA. Of most interest to us though? He’s a fully paid-up, card-carrying car nerd, with extraordinary stories and an insight into car culture you won’t want to miss. It’s the Battle of the Generations on Very Vehicular this week, as our three guests debate their views on car culture. Representing Gen X is your host, Scotto. In the tastefully grey (or is it green these days?) Millennial corner, it’s returning friend of the pod, Ron Zaras, and lastly, hoisting the flag for all of Gen Z, we’ve got newcomer Chaz Warren (@ChazzyDawg). Chazzy made his name in the world of film photography, where his visceral style found viral success on Instagram, his camera acting as a passport to a world of cars he’d only dreamed of being able to approach. Now, alongside working for big names in the industry, he’s set his sights on creating his own culture of photo-forward meets, where the old rules don’t apply, as he brings community to legions of young car worshippers, whether they’re toting analog or digital machinery. So whether you’re prehistoric; or barely old enough to sneak out of the house unhindered by your parents tracking you on Life360, find out what this unusual council makes of it all. We’re joined this week by Jean Pierre Kraemer, of JP Performance, undoubtedly the biggest automotive YouTuber in Germany, and one of the most successful creators on the planet. He’s a TV star and celebrity, builder of hundreds of builds from the classic, to the electrified ultramodern and everything in between. Not just content to produce content (ha) he owns and runs no fewer than sixteen businesses, and his complex in his native Dortmund is droolworthy. There’s the workshop itself, a burger bar, a theater-style dyno and down the block, his very own Pace Car Museum, housing his own creations alongside a staggering assortment of motorsport and car culture’s most significant metal. If all this doesn’t leave you breathless to find out how he did it, what’s next and what he thinks of the US? Well there’s no hope for you – you’ll just have to listen! Firing Order is BACK for Season 4 of Very Vehicular, and we’re bringing you an absolute heater of a first episode with veteran motoring journalist and podcaster Matt Farah (The Smoking Tire) as well as Our Cousin Vinny: Vin Anatra. If you’re new around here, the aim of the show is simple: to form a definite ranking (which definitely isn’t just the opinions of whichever three lovable idiots are on that particular week), and this week it’s the most overhyped hero cars, that you wish you’d never met! Our hosts have decades and decades (and dec—) of seat time between them across a plethora of automotive heroes: from the pedestrian (ha) to the decidedly exotic! Stay tuned, to find out which one will top the list. For the final episode of season 3, Very Vehicular is delighted to present none other than TJ Hunt! Rolling up to the studio in a minty white V8 Vantage, with the all-time longest Very Vehicular episode record firmly in his sights, TJ hasn’t come to play, he’s here to win! In a departure from form, Scotto has the mic turned around on him as TJ unleashes his pent-up questions in desperate need of answers. This reverse interview has it all: origin stories, the dawn of YouTube, the art of growing a business (and what happens when you lose one!), love, loss and identity, even movies: it’s practical therapy, people! So unhook your phone (shout out, landline generation), slip out to grab some milk & cigarettes, do whatever you must - this episode is not to be missed! Most of all? Mike Burroughs is back… and he’s got some gripes! If you didn’t already know him from StanceWorks; or indeed for his legendary F40 and K-swapped 308 projects, you may remember Mike as one of our earliest guests alongside Ferrari expert Victoria Bruno. It seems only right to bring him back on and throw him the mic - he’s got some things to say! (Oh, and stop asking him when the F40 project will be done!). Apart from *cough* that project… Mike has plenty of other fascinating projects, and he even gives us a sneak peek of what’s in the pipeline. Beyond the metal, Scotto and Mike get borderline philosophical on this one, it’s a ripper.
