Wet mounting scope rings is gaining attention in the precision rifle world—but does adding lubricant between your scope mount and Picatinny rail actually improve the installation, or are we giving up friction that helps keep everything locked in place? In this episode, Jamie shares what we recently encountered during a Long Range Shooting School when a rifle arrived with a wet-mounted scope system. After tearing the rifle down and working through repeatability and point-of-impact issues, it raised some important questions. We dive into: The difference between torque, clamping force, and friction Why 45 inch-pounds of torque doesn't tell the whole story What happens to surface friction when lubricant is introduced Using the crossbolt as a recoil lug versus relying on clamping friction Recoil, roll, yaw, vibration, and movement in a precision rifle Why Wolf Precision has traditionally dry-mounted scope rings More than 20 years of experience removing and reinstalling optics on school rifles Why a new mounting technique deserves testing before automatically becoming the new standard This isn't about saying one company or method is right or wrong. It's about asking the mechanical question: If maximum grip and zero movement are the goal, does lubricating one of the most important mounting surfaces really help us get there? Sometimes the newest technique deserves a closer look before we add it to the toolbox. We also give updates on the Practical Tactical Shooters Challenge, our 2027 Long Range Shooting School schedule, the upcoming Immokalee, Florida class, and new Wolf Pack training content. How many rounds does it really take to master a rifle—and what's the smartest way to get those rounds downrange? In Episode 284, Jamie Dodson takes a close look at the value of the training rifle and why he believes it may be more important today than ever. A training rifle doesn't have to be a $12,000 duplicate of your hunting or match rifle. Jamie breaks down three practical ways to approach one: 1. The Budget Trainer — Start with an inexpensive or used .223 barreled action and put it into a stock or chassis that closely mirrors your primary rifle. 2. The Switch-Barrel Trainer — Use the same custom rifle, stock, optic and overall setup while switching to a lower-recoiling .223 barrel for high-volume practice. 3. The Full Twin — Build a dedicated training rifle that mirrors your primary rifle as closely as possible, giving you a second rifle that can serve as both a trainer and a backup. Jamie also discusses two additional options—.22 rimfire and high-quality PCP air rifles—and where each one fits into a serious marksmanship training program. Drawing from decades of teaching long-range shooting, Jamie explains why lower recoil, increased trigger time, better follow-through and the ability to self-spot can dramatically accelerate the learning process. He also shares stories from using his own .223 trainer in sniper-style matches, including competing at distances beyond 1,000 yards. And this isn't just for competitive shooters. For hunters shooting lightweight rifles and larger magnum cartridges, a training rifle may be even more valuable. Instead of trying to develop your skills while absorbing heavy recoil and burning through expensive ammunition, you can build the fundamentals with a lower-recoiling rifle and then transfer those skills directly back to your hunting rifle. The goal isn't simply to shoot more. It's to get more quality trigger time, develop better fundamentals and become completely comfortable behind your rifle. If becoming a more consistent, capable marksman is the goal, a properly set up training rifle may be one of the best investments you can make. Learn more at WolfPrecision.net. How many rounds does it really take to become a highly proficient rifle shooter? Is it 1,000 rounds? 10,000? 50,000? In Episode 283, Jamie Dodson breaks down the progression from simply shooting a rifle to truly mastering one—and why the quality of every round matters far more than simply sending bullets downrange. We look at what you can expect at different stages: • 1,000–2,000 rounds: Building competency and solid fundamentals • 5,000 rounds: Becoming an experienced shooter who recognizes mistakes • 10,000 rounds: Developing a high level of proficiency • 20,000–30,000 rounds: Becoming a well-rounded, experienced rifleman • 50,000+ quality rounds: Entering the territory of true mastery Jamie also shares lessons learned from competition, nearly two decades of teaching long-range shooting, and why identifying and practicing your weaknesses is one of the fastest ways to improve. The takeaway is simple: You don't need 10,000 rounds. You need 10,000 rounds worth of lessons. Next episode, we'll continue the discussion with training rifles—why they matter, how to build one correctly, and how to get valuable trigger time without wearing out your primary hunting or match rifle. Wolf Precision is heading south! In this episode, Jamie announces our 2027 Winter Long Range Shooting School in Immokalee, Florida, scheduled for February 26–28. This special traveling class will be limited to just eight students—and unlike our Pennsylvania schools, suppressors are not required, so muzzle-brake-equipped rifles are welcome. Jamie also shares what's ahead for Wolf Precision in 2027 as we prepare to take the ACE system on the road, attend matches, shooting events, and industry gatherings around the country. We also get into several shop and shooting topics, including our upcoming testing of a Proof Research gain-twist barrel, some unusual new 6.5 chamberings customers are asking for, and why our experience loading thousands upon thousands of precision rifle rounds has convinced us that cleaning your brass matters. In this episode of Wolf Precision's Long Range Shooting and Custom Rifle Building Podcast, Jamie takes a hard look at what seems to be becoming the new standard across the shooting and firearms industry: "good enough." From magazines that won't feed to chassis components that don't fit, incorrect orders, poor quality control, and parts arriving that simply aren't right, Jamie shares what Wolf Precision is seeing firsthand—and why shooters and rifle builders need to pay closer attention than ever to the components they purchase. Precision isn't supposed to mean close enough. Jamie discusses why Wolf Precision continues to inspect, test-fit, and verify the components that go into every rifle, why accountability matters, and why manufacturers who maintain high standards deserve recognition. We also introduce the newly redesigned Wolf Pack Online Training Center, including the Online Long Range Shooting School, Online Reloading Class, and Online Rifle Building and Maintenance Series. With hundreds of videos accumulated over more than four years, the new layout makes it easier than ever to work through the training in order and take advantage of everything available to Wolf Pack members. Plus, Jamie talks about upcoming Wolf Pack range days for 2027, the limited 2027 Long Range Shooting School schedule, and a possible return to Florida for a shooting school at Immokalee. Reloading can save you money and produce incredibly accurate ammunition—but one mistake can destroy a rifle or seriously injure you or someone beside you. In this episode, Jamie Dodson talks about two of the most important responsibilities every handloader needs to understand: due diligence and complacency. A recent safety notice involving published reloading data is a powerful reminder that even information printed in a trusted reloading manual should never be accepted blindly. Jamie explains why you should cross-check multiple reloading manuals, compare manufacturer data, watch for unusual load information, and sign up for manufacturer safety notices and updates. We also discuss why experienced reloaders can sometimes be at even greater risk when familiarity turns into complacency. If you reload ammunition—or know someone who does—this is an episode worth sharing. It could save a rifle, prevent an injury, or even save a life. Take reloading seriously. Do your research. Double-check your data. Never become complacent. Learn more about Wolf Precision, our shooting schools, custom rifles, and the Wolf Pack online training programs at WolfPrecision.net. In Episode 279 of Wolf Precision's Long Range Shooting and Custom Rifle Building Podcast, Jamie Dodson takes a closer look at one of the most debated subjects in precision reloading: bullet seating depth and jump to the lands. Are you trying too hard to seat your bullets as close to the rifling as possible? After more than 20 years of running shooting schools, loading ammunition, and shooting out dozens of barrels from new to end-of-life, we've seen rifles continue to shoot exceptionally well even as bullet jump grows from 20 thousandths to 50, 80, 100 thousandths and beyond. Jamie discusses why chasing the lands may not always produce the best or most practical load, why larger bullet jumps can work surprisingly well, and what our school rifles have taught us after thousands of rounds. We also cover: Why measuring extremely small jumps can be less repeatable than you think What we learned from 22 Creedmoor barrels with more than 3,000 rounds Why we prefer bullets that are less sensitive to seating depth Factory ammunition and why substantial bullet jump can still produce excellent accuracy The relationship between seating depth, pressure, and case capacity Weatherby's use of long freebore and what we can learn from it Magnum primers in cartridges such as the 6.5x47 Lapua Why published reloading data should be bullet-, powder-, and component-specific Case failures, extractor design, and why action design matters when pressure escapes Jamie also gives updates on the 2027 Wolf Precision Long Range Shooting School, upcoming in-person reloading classes, the Practical Tactical Shooters Challenge, and some exciting new machining technology being developed at Wolf Precision. If you reload for precision rifles, this episode may make you rethink just how close to the lands your ammunition really needs to be. Speed is not the starting point—it is the result of mastering the fundamentals. In this episode, Jamie explains why slowing down is one of the fastest ways to become a better long-range shooter. Using lessons from precision rifle training, competition shooting, and trials motorcycle riding, he discusses how deliberate practice builds control, confidence, accuracy, and consistency when the pressure and pace increase. Jamie also shares practical advice for breaking down timed shooting stages, avoiding mental and physical burnout, and practicing the most difficult parts of a shooting position without wasting ammunition.
