AI can think. But does that mean it's conscious? My friend and returning guest Chris Niebauer is a neuropsychologist and the bestselling author of No Self, No Problem, The No Self, No Problem Workbook, and his new book, The Abstract Mind. He has spent years exploring the relationship between the brain, the thinking mind, and consciousness, which makes him the perfect person to join me for this fascinating conversation about AI.In this episode, we explore a question that is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore: Can artificial intelligence actually be conscious? The answer may depend on something even more fundamental: whether thinking and consciousness are the same thing. Our conversation challenges the enormous value our society places on the thinking mind and considers what AI might be revealing about our own consciousness. If a machine can think faster and perhaps even better than we can, what does that tell us about who we really are? We explore consciousness as something far greater than thought, intuition as a deeper form of knowing, and what becomes possible when the mind stops running the show and becomes a tool for something greater.Key takeaways from this episode:Thinking and consciousness are not the same thing. AI's ability to manipulate language and information doesn't necessarily answer the question of whether it is conscious. We have spent centuries defining ourselves by our ability to think. AI may be forcing us to reconsider whether thinking is really what makes us who we are.The thinking mind is an extraordinary tool, but we may rely on it far more than we need to.If consciousness doesn't originate in the brain, we may need to rethink what it means for AI to be conscious.Intuition comes from a deeper place than thought. When we quiet the thinking mind, we create more space for that deeper knowing to guide us.The mind doesn't have to lead. It can become a tool for intuition, allowing us to move through life with greater flow, ease, and trust.Maybe the rise of artificial intelligence isn't just asking us to understand machines differently. Maybe it's inviting us to understand ourselves differently too.Explore more of Chris Niebauer’s work on the mind, consciousness, and the science of self at ChrisNiebauerPhD.comWhat if the way we think is also what keeps us stuck? Is communicating with spirit reserved for a gifted few, or available to us all?Recently I came across a post from a well-respected medium pushing back on the popular idea that everyone is a medium. Her concern was a fair one: not everyone is trained to receive clear, accurate messages for other people, and treating mediumship as universal can gloss over the real skill and responsibility that professional work requires. I understand that completely. And I still believe we're all mediums. We're all spiritual beings having a human experience, and we're all innately connected to the spiritual realm, including our loved ones in spirit. Whether you train to receive messages from spirit professionally, or simply communicate for your own edification, the ability belongs to everyone. In this episode I share my own unconventional path into mediumship, why I resisted the word for years, and why I've come to believe that integrity, love, and a genuine desire to serve matter more than proving anything or doing it someone else's way.Key takeaways from this episode:Connection goes both ways. You can reach toward spirit, and spirit is always reaching toward youMediumship doesn't look the same for everyone. It might come through dreams, signs, words, feelings, or a simple knowingWe often feel blocked because we're expecting too much, or waiting for the information to arrive in a certain way. Start with what's already flowingStay curious and playful. Spirit isn't serious, and forcing it only gets in the wayGrief can cloud our ability to sense a loved one's presence. You're still connected even when you can't feel itIf you feel called to do this professionally, follow that call with integrity, love, and a real desire to serveYou don't have to become a medium. You already are one.Show Notes Space: Book an intuitive reading or coaching session with me wherever you are in the world!Meet your spirit guide and receive a message.Join the Intuitive Connection Premier Community Experience a one-of-a-kind in-person retreat experiences at Cactus Blossom Retreat in Escondido, California Connect and learn with me here:WebsiteInstagramFacebookConnect with like-minded souls in the Intuitive Connection Community Facebook GroupDownload a copy of my Free Activate Your Intuition EbookDiscover My Online Courses:Activating Your IntuitionThe Journey of Your Soul: Understanding ReincarnationSpirit Guides: How to Connect to Your Spiritual Support TeamFind the books mentioned in the episode here!Disclosure: I am an affiliate of Bookshop.org and I will earn a commission if you click through and make a purchase. This podcast is a part of the MindBodySpirit.fm Podcast NetworkVisit us at www.mindbodyspirit.fm
You've probably heard of near-death experiences. But what about shared death experiences? In this episode, I sit down with Reverend Dr. Scott Taylor, president of the Expanded Awareness Institute and a researcher and guide in near-death and shared death experiences. Scott has spent decades exploring the nonphysical universe and helping others learn to access expanded states of consciousness.Scott's journey began with an extraordinary experience at the bedside of a seven-year-old boy named Nolan. As Nolan died, Scott experienced Nolan's mother, who had died just six days earlier, coming to meet him. Scott joined them as they moved into the light, while at the same time remaining fully conscious and present in the hospital room. Fifteen years later, another person who had been in the room that day independently described an almost identical experience. We talk about what shared death experiences can teach us about consciousness, the loving nature of the universe, and what happens when we leave our physical bodies. We also explore Scott's work helping people intentionally access expanded states of consciousness, connect with loved ones and guides, and experience the nonphysical universe without having to nearly die to get there.Key takeaways from this episode:A near-death experience happens when you leave your own physical body and return. In a shared death experience, you witness or even participate in someone else's transition.Shared death experiences offer a powerful glimpse into what happens when we die. In William Peters' research with 900 people who had shared death experiences, every person described a benevolent afterlife.Consciousness isn't limited by the physical body. During his shared death experience, Scott experienced himself as fully in the light and fully present in the hospital room at the same time.We don't have to wait for a near-death or shared death experience to explore the nonphysical universe. Scott teaches people how to intentionally enter expanded states of consciousness and explore these realms for themselves.Outside the physical world, there is no linear time. Scott believes our other lifetimes are happening simultaneously and that their wisdom is available to us now.Intuition has a different energy signature than the thinking mind. The more we listen to it and trust it, the stronger that connection becomes. These abilities aren't something we need to learn from scratch. As Scott says, spiritual exploration is about remembering what we already know.Shared death experiences show us that consciousness persists after we die, and offer a glimpse of what lies beyond the physical realm.Show Notes Space: Explore Dr. Scott’s meditations, courses, resources, and ways to connect at NearDeathMeditations.com. What you're reaching for arrives when you loosen your grasp. We cling to the things we want, a job, a dream, the people we love, sure that if we just try hard enough, we can keep them from slipping away. But so often, that very effort is what stands in our way. In this episode, three beautiful souls came for guidance with very different concerns, and the same message came through for all of them: you can loosen your hold. Everything is already working out for you.Key takeaways from this episode:What you believe shapes what you live. Pretending you don't have a fear won't move you past it, but meeting it with compassion will.Overthinking a goal can create more resistance than momentum. When we relax the mind, the path forward appears.Celebrate the abundance already flowing in your life. Appreciating what you have keeps you in the flow of receiving.Don't do it if it's not fun. When sharing your gifts starts to feel like a burden, it may be a sign you've drifted from your path. With the people we love, offer your guidance once, then trust them to find their own way.Even when you're afraid for someone, their path is theirs to walk. Trust that their soul knows what it's doing. When we ease our grip and trust the flow, what we've been longing for finally has room to find us.Join me and Dr. Larry Farwell for The Science of Creating Miracles retreat. When something is truly yours to do, it doesn't feel like a choice. It feels irrepressible. In this episode, I sit down with Suzanne Ross, an author, speaker, and event producer whose gift is bringing spiritual community together. Suzanne has built a life around following her calling, from her first book launch to her equinox retreats in Sedona and now San Diego, and I've had the joy of attending one of her events myself. We talk about what it feels like to be genuinely compelled toward your purpose, when the guidance, the gifts, and the ability to act all seem to arrive at once. Suzanne shares the mountaintop moment of surrender that changed the course of her life, why she checks in with her guides before saying yes so she doesn't chase the shiny object, and how being multifaceted stops feeling scattered once you realize everything is connected. We also get into the practical side: building a bridge from where you are to where you're called to be, and why alignment doesn't have to mean blowing up your whole life at once. And we explore how the science of quantum consciousness is beginning to explain what mystics have always known. Key takeaways from this episode: •A genuine calling comes with its own equipment. The skills and support to fulfill it tend to show up as you go. •Don't confuse a soul-level yes with shiny object syndrome. Sit with it, check in with your guidance, and make sure it's genuinely aligned. •Being multifaceted isn't the same as being scattered. Once you see that everything is connected, the many things you do become one expression. •Misalignment speaks through the body. Anxiety, stress, and physical symptoms are often signs you've drifted from your calling. •You don't have to jump off the mountain. Build a bridge, one foot in the practical world and one in the spiritual, and take the next aligned step. •Alignment is rarely all or nothing. Sometimes it's a new hobby or a more inspiring role, not leaving everything behind at once. •We're not just moving through reality. As conscious beings, we help shape it, which means we're creating our experience as we go. When you trust the flow and follow where it leads, that's when the magic happens. What if consciousness isn't produced by the brain? In this episode, I sit down with Daniel Branco, a Harvard-trained neurologist and neuroscientist and author of Spirit Duality: Spiritual Initiation for Rational People. Daniel and I share a similar origin story: we both set out to understand consciousness by studying the brain, and we both eventually left that path when we realized we might be looking in the wrong place. We explore why the idea that matter is fundamental is exactly that—an assumption, not a scientific discovery—and what happens when we build our understanding of ourselves around the belief that we are finite beings who cease to exist when we die. Daniel makes the case for holding our beliefs loosely, as working assumptions rather than ultimate truths. We also talk about the limits of what science can tell us about our inner experience. Science can measure what happens in the brain when we feel pain, for example, but it can't capture what pain actually feels like. We explore the possibility that the brain functions more like a filter, narrowing our experience rather than creating it, what Daniel experienced during his own near-death experience, and why quieting the mind may open the door to everything beyond it. Key takeaways from this episode: •That matter is fundamental isn't something science discovered. It's an assumption science was built on—and one we can question. •Beliefs are best held loosely, as working tools for navigating the world. The danger comes when we mistake them for ultimate reality. •Science can measure the correlates of an experience, but it can't reach the felt sense of it. No brain scan captures what pain actually feels like. •The brain may work more like a filter, narrowing our experience, than like a source that generates it. •Peak experiences often come when brain activity quiets, not ramps up. Hallucinogens and near-death states offer fascinating clues about the relationship between the brain and consciousness. •If consciousness is primary, then you aren't just perceiving reality—you're participating in its creation as you experience it. •You don't have to transcend your humanity. Your human lens is the unique angle your soul chose to express itself through. There is so much more to who you are than the material world can measure. When you already know it all works out, life stops being something to survive and becomes something to enjoy. In this episode, I share a small experience that turned into a big reminder. I've been a die-hard Detroit Pistons fan since childhood. Since moving to the West Coast, though, the games often air while I'm still working, so I've started watching them later on replay, already knowing the final score. It completely changed how I experienced the game, and it got me thinking about how differently we'd all move through life if we trusted, deep down, that everything is always working out for us. I get into why knowing the ending didn't ruin the game. Instead, it freed me to enjoy the artistry, the comebacks, even the cliffhanger moments, without the pit-in-your-stomach anxiety. And I share what the guides had to say about the difference between how our soul experiences life and how our human self does. Your soul is in it for the ride, delighting in the whole game, while the human part is the one clutching the outcome. Key takeaways from this episode: •Every desire is already unfolding somewhere, and the more you trust that, the more you open yourself to experiencing it. •At your core, nothing is wrong with you. You're safe, whole, and lovable. The rest is the illusion, the shadow of who you really are. •When you live from the assumption that all is well, obstacles stop feeling like emergencies and start feeling like part of the show. •Your soul isn't attached to outcomes the way your human self is. It came here to play, explore a theme from every angle, and delights in the whole journey. •Your soul celebrates your growth and sees the rightness in every experience, even when your human self can't yet see the bigger picture. •Even the hardest losses can become some of the most beautiful, meaningful moments in the story. •When you forget all of this, that's the moment to love yourself, soothe yourself, and gently remember that everything is always working out for you. When you remember that everything is always working out for you, every moment becomes something to savor rather than survive. There's an energy that moves through all of us, waiting to awaken. More and more people are having unexpected spiritual experiences: a sudden rush of energy, an overwhelming sense of love, or a profound knowing that seems to come out of nowhere. Often, they wonder if they're going crazy. In this episode, I sit down with Corrine Lebrun, TEDx speaker, author, and host of the Wild Divine Bliss podcast, to explore kundalini, the life force energy behind these awakenings, and what it really means to experience a kundalini awakening. We talk about what's happening during these experiences, why they can feel blissful one day and overwhelming the next, and how to navigate them with greater understanding and trust. We also explore why the goal isn't to chase extraordinary spiritual experiences or escape everyday life, but to integrate these awakenings into a grounded, embodied, and deeply human way of being. Key takeaways from this episode: •Kundalini is a life force energy we all have. Awakening isn't acquiring something new, it's the same energy growing stronger and moving more fully through you •These experiences are often spontaneous. You don't have to reach a breaking point to awaken, though for some people that's how it happens •A sudden awakening can feel blissful or deeply unsettling, and neither means something has gone wrong •When energy expands faster than you've done the inner work, whatever you've kept in the shadows tends to surface. The work is learning presence and facing it •Protecting yourself with white light is fear-based. Try expanding your energy and turning up your own light instead, so everything else burns away •Psychic ability is a human capacity, not proof of spiritual development. It can be used for good or misused, so don't let it become a parlor trick •Everything is spiritual. You are a spiritual being having a human experience, and you can't opt out of that in any moment When we stop chasing the extraordinary, we find the sacred was here all along.
